The Tug-of-War Between Macro Headwinds and Key Support for Gold
— The Bearish Trend Persists, but Grant the Market Some Room to "Breathe"
I. The Macro Backdrop: A "Chain Reaction" of U.S.-Iran Tensions, Oil Prices, and Inflation
The current weakness in gold is not merely a technical correction; it represents a repricing based on shifting macro fundamentals. With the U.S. midterm elections approaching, escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran—coupled with a sharp surge in crude oil prices—are effectively "adding fuel to the fire" of already rising inflation expectations. Inflation data ticked upward last month, and if high oil prices persist, it is unlikely that U.S. inflation figures will decline in the near term. This, in turn, is set to reignite expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
For gold, this serves as a significant blow: as expectations for real interest rates climb, the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset increases, naturally putting downward pressure on the price of gold. These fundamental headwinds provide the primary justification for the prevailing bearish trend.
II. Technical Perspective: A Breakdown on the 4-Hour Chart and Confirmed Resistance
From a technical standpoint, gold has experienced a breakdown on the 4-hour timeframe, with the 4070–4080 zone—previously a support level—now acting as resistance. Absent any major news catalysts, gold is unlikely to see significant movement in the short term and will likely consolidate within a bottoming range.
However, it is crucial to note that the current price is not far from the support level established in the 3950 area back in June and July. This suggests that while the overall trend remains bearish, the potential for further downside is becoming increasingly limited. Investors should avoid blindly chasing the downside—following a sharp decline, the market typically requires a rebound for correction. Any new short positions should only be considered once a rebound has fully materialized and reached a resistance level. III. Key Price Levels and Trading Strategy
Support: 3986 (intraday low), 3950
Resistance: 4020, 4055–4059, 4090
Trading Plan:
1. Shorting with the Trend (Primary Strategy)
If the price rebounds toward 4030 and faces resistance (stalling), consider a short-term short position, targeting 3990–3986.
Conservative Approach: Wait for a rebound into the 4055–4059 resistance zone before entering a short position. Targets: 4020 and 3986; if these levels are broken, look toward 3950.
2. Short-term Rebound Play (Only for oversold conditions; use very light position sizing and quick entries/exits)
If the price pulls back toward 3986, fails to set a new low, and shows signs of stabilization, consider a long position with a very small size. Target the 4020–4025 resistance zone and exit immediately upon reaching it—do not hold for the long term.
3. Handling Breakdowns
If the gold price falls below the 3986 low again, abandon any long-side bias; instead, follow the trend by going short, with a target of 3950.
Only if the price firmly establishes itself above 4091 will the short-term bearish momentum pause, shifting the market into a range-bound consolidation phase.
IV. Psychology and Discipline: The Bearish Trend Remains—Don’t Let Emotions Dictate Your Trades
The overall strategy is clear: the bearish trend persists. After a sharp decline, wait for a rebound to enter short positions. Any short-term long positions should be viewed strictly as plays on an oversold correction—do not mistake them for a definitive market bottom.
In a market where the direction is often unpredictable, some traders profit while others struggle. The fear of a sudden rally when you should be shorting, or the fear of a pullback when you should be going long—these issues are not technical in nature; they are psychological. Often, it is not the price itself that affects you, but rather the excessive projections and scenarios you construct in your own mind.
Gold is currently weak overall, but it remains relatively close to previous lows, meaning a rebound is possible at any time. Exercise patience: for buying the dip, wait until a bottom is clearly established or the price nears the 3950 support level; for shorting, keep a close watch on the resistance zone between 4070 and 4080.
